REVIEWER'S OPINION:
The sources of conflict might have worked if done differently, but the way it was done didn't entertain me. She was mad at Mike for a reason I didn't like. He didn't deserve that. She had a major problem with her father because he criticized her, belittled her, never cared about her interests, and never spent time with her. As a result she was unable to have a trusting and loving relationship with Mike. The conflicts during the last half took away from the fun I enjoyed in the first half. On balance it was ok, and it kept my interest until the end.

STORY BRIEF:
Mike is the high school football coach. His two star players just informed him they are "ineligible" to play because they are flunking chorus. Mike goes to chorus teacher Andi and asks her to let his boys play. She refuses because they were disruptive and disrespectful to her. She offers a bet with Mike. If he wins, she will give the boys passing grades, and they won't have to come to class. If she wins, the boys must be model choristers, and Mike must join Andi's church choir. They bet on the Monday night football game. Andi appeared to be sports ignorant and chose a team based on their colors. Mike was smirking with confidence.

Other conflicts in the story included school board members wanting to fire the coach if he didn't win games, someone wanting Andi fired as church choir director, Andi's problems with her father, and some student problems.

Mike Best Bet At The End Zone Book 1 edition by Doreen Alsen Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really did love this book. I was a little uncertain at first. Things jumped right in immediately, and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to keep up. But my worry was unfounded. Fun, interesting characters made for a really great ride.
I loved,"Mike's Best Bet". The characters were believable, fun and sexy. Doreen Alsen's writing talent made me smile and cheer for the couple as they overcame the internal and external obsticles that threatened to keep them apart. I highly recommend this book and the subsequent books to be released in this series
Doreen Alsen's MIKE'S BEST BET is a sports versus the arts theme, set in a high school. That's the basic conflict of the book, but it quickly becomes much more complicated than that. There are several teen-aged subplots that include serious subjects such as teen aged pregnancy, cheating, and peer pressure. The overall tension of the story is that when two adults decide to have a relationship there are more people involved in it than just themselves.
The premise of this book is good - the whole "opposites attract and love conquers all" theme with the football coach and a music teacher. The opening scene was funny. Grammar was good. There was conflict, and not too much drawing out the misunderstandings. There were obstacles to the characters' romance.

But for some reason, I wasn't able to "go deep" with the characters. I found the characters, obstacles and conflict (especially around Andi's relationship with her father) all somewhat cliché. The sub-plots could have been really compelling but were not developed; they seemed to be there only for the purpose of creating obstacles for the characters.

In sum a little "lighter" read than I care for, but others may like it just fine!
